How a SmartRING
Strander Works

The SmartRING Strander cuts tree length or batch-fed logs into strands for OSB production. Debarked logs are clamped in place while the carriage-mounted strander ring extends into the cutting chamber. Knives are mounted within the inner periphery of the ring, where they strand the log load that is held within the chamber.

While tree-length logs can be fed directly into the SmartRING Strander’s wood chamber by a long-log conveyor, we have an automated Batch Feeder available to fill, stack, align, and feed cut-to-length logs into the stranding chamber.

Variable Carriage Velocity

The SmartRING Strander’s closed-loop feedback controls immediately detect changes to the ring speed (which can be caused by a batch of dry wood or high-density logs), and will automatically make precise adjustments to the carriage velocity in real-time. This ensures the thickness of your strands will never deviate beyond your desired output, maintaining a consistent strand quality.

Nutrunner Knife Clamping System

The SmartRING Strander’s automated nutrunner system ensures positive knife clamping procedures for safe operation and consistent strand quality. Ensuring knives are installed properly, our nutrunner system provides immediate feedback to the customer and will not operate until all bolts have achieved the required torque and angle.

Disposable Knife Systems (DKS)

These disposable, reversible knives offer significant advantages over traditional plate knives, beginning with the elimination of the grinding room and its associated machinery and labor. They are also lightweight for safe handling and faster knife changes, and include a built-in counterknife with the ability to target a consistent projection between knives with per-pocket tuning.

ISK Integrated Scoring Knife System for SmartRING Strander

Integrated Scoring Knives (ISK)

Available as an upgrade for mills already using our Disposable Knife System (DKS), our ISK system utilizes the same facegear while eliminating the need to purchase, stock, install, and change the scoring tips. Not only does this simplify and speed up the knife change process, it also ensures consistent strand quality with its precise scoring tip projections, reduced tip widths, and sharper scoring tips.
